Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Jacqueline Russell is advising residents to stay vigilant against a recent jury duty phone scam.
Those pulling off the scam are spoofing actual court phone numbers to tell victims they failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine. County Court officials will never solicit payments over the phone using credit cards, gift cards, or electronic funds transfers (EFTs) if they fail to appear for jury duty.
If local residents receive calls purporting to be from Schuylkill County Courts demanding money, fines, fees, or court costs, they’re being warned to withhold all sensitive information and don’t make a payment.
If you get such a call, hang up immediately and contact local or state police, court officials say. Residents can also report instances to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection by calling (800) 441-2555 or emailing scams@attorneygeneral.gov.
