A Schuylkill County woman was jailed recently after allegedly stealing milk, cakes, and candy from a Pottsville convenience store.
Tammy Baker, 45, of Pottsville, faces charges of third-degree felony retail theft and third-degree felony receiving stolen property.
Police in the city were dispatched around 4:30 a.m. on July 27 to the 7-Eleven along ROute 61 following a 9-1-1 call reporting a retail theft in progress. A store employee reported that Baker, along with two other individuals, placed multiple items into a bag and left the store just before 4:20 a.m. without paying. The caller also noted that Baker was in the area of the One Norwegian Plaza office building across the highway.
Officers located Baker and two companions at One Norwegian Plaza shortly thereafter. When police informed the group that they were investigating a retail theft and intended to return to 7-Eleven to review security footage, Baker said that she took a milk and produced a bottle of Guers milk from her backpack.
Police placed Baker into custody. During a search incident to arrest, officers located various candy items in her front hoodie pocket, along with additional candy items and two cakes in her backpack.
According to police, Baker initially claimed the candy items were not from 7-Eleven before admitting they were stolen from the store. She also initially denied stealing the cakes before acknowledging that they were stolen as well.
Investigating officers reviewed surveillance video at 7-Eleven, which showed Baker taking all of the recovered items, as well as three 7 Select ice cream cakes that were not recovered. Police say the total retail value of the items was $44.07.
The charges were graded as third-degree felonies because Baker has four prior retail theft convictions.
Following her preliminary arraignment on July 27 before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Baker was remanded to Schuylkill County Prison after being unable to post 10% of $5,000 bail. Records indicate Baker is still behind bars. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17 before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley.
