A Schuylkill County man is facing a felony strangulation charge after police say he choked a woman during an argument at a home in Tamaqua.
John Moser, 62, of Tamaqua, is charged with strangulation, a second-degree felony, along with simple assault and harassment in connection with the alleged July 22 incident.
Tamaqua Police were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Orwigsburg St. around 5:30 p.m. that day for a domestic. Dispatchers relayed that the caller had been strangled and that the man responsible was on the first floor of the residence, according to police.
Moser told the responding officer he had been in an argument with the victim and that she was upstairs in a front bedroom, police say.
The woman told police she has had ongoing issues with Moser. She said he came into the bedroom, held her down, and applied pressure to her neck for roughly two and a half minutes, and that it impeded her ability to breathe. Police say they observed marks on her neck consistent with her account.
She also told police that Moser grabbed her by the arm and threw her against the wall around 5 p.m. the previous day, July 21, causing substantial pain. Police say bruising on her right arm was consistent with someone being grabbed.
A man who said he was on the phone with the woman during the incident told police he heard her drop the phone and call out for Moser to get off her.
Moser was arraigned that night before Magisterial District Judge Anthony. Kilker, who set bail at $50,000, and remanded to Schuylkill County Prison. He was released the next day after posting bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer.
