Pottsville is launching its free downtown parking program for senior residents next week.
The program is open to city residents 62 years old and older and grants free parking permits for spots in Pottsville’s downtown business district. Each household is eligible to receive two parking permits, provided that the registered owner of the vehicle meets the age requirement.
With the permit, downtown visitors are given two free hours of parking in a single spot. If they go over the time, a ticket could be issued.
At a brief ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday morning, Pottsville native and lifelong Fifth Ward resident Evelyn Barnwell – accompanied by her service dog Beebee – was given the first permit. On Monday, the permits will be available to all residents 62 and over.
Barnwell, 92, tells The Canary that she doesn’t come downtown as often as she used to but is thankful for the free parking program.
To get a permit, residents just need to bring their driver’s license to the Parking Authority office at City Hall. The license must have a Pottsville address on it to qualify. Two license plates can be registered per permit.
When a permit holder is downtown and a parking enforcement officer comes upon their vehicle, they’ll digitally “chalk” the vehicle and start the clock on the free parking time. If the officer returns after two hours and the vehicle is still in the same spot, it could be ticketed.
