Schuylkill County Man Allegedly Attacked Another Man with Baseball Bat

Cara facing simple assault, harassment charges

A Schuylkill County man is facing an assault charge after he allegedly struck a man with a metal baseball bat.

Police in Tamaqua say they were called to an apartment on N. Railroad St. last Wednesday (July 15) for a reported assault. At the scene, police say they spoke with a man who says he and Shannon Cara, 58, were engaged in a verbal argument. Cara, he said, came home intoxicated.

The man said Cara was upset about him staying in the apartment and he wanted him to leave. At some point during the argument, Cara grabbed a metal baseball bat and struck the man twice in the right arm, causing a small cut and bleeding.

The alleged victim told police he was able to get the bat from Cara and they went to ground. On the ground, he said Cara punched him several times in the face, causing swelling above his right eye.

As the victim then left the apartment to phone police, Cara reportedly locked the door behind him. The victim then was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Coaldale for an evaluation of his injuries.

Cara, police say, refused to answer the door or pick up the phone when they called in an attempt to get his side of the story. A preliminary hearing for Cara has been scheduled for Aug. 18. He’s facing a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and a summary offense for harassment.
