In this Q&A, Starr talks about balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship, her background in healthcare, and her dream of being featured in Vogue Weddings.
What inspired you to start this business, and how did your personal journey lead you here?
I started learning photography in high school but never really took it seriously until 2022 after my son was born and I started doing his pictures. My business was established in 2022, and I started offering weddings in 2023.
What unique products or services do you offer that can’t be found elsewhere in our community?
I offer pretty much everything: standard portrait sessions, boudoir, weddings, events, branding, and mini sessions. Something cool I do is offer sessions with my ball python, Belladonna!
Can you share an interesting fact or story about your business that most people may not know?
A lot of my clients have met my husband and kids as they usually tag along on nice days to sessions at the lake or local parks. It’s great seeing clients’ kids and mine socializing and wanting to play together. I have built great friendships with a lot of my clientele, and I love having the privilege to capture the memories of the chapter of life they’re in. I built my business on the foundation of family.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business, and how did you overcome it?
I think the biggest challenge for my business the last couple of years has been managing motherhood and a business at the same time, especially with my pregnancy in 2025 with my daughter when I faced serious health complications and had to close my studio. I believe my experiences as a mom make me more compassionate and understanding to my clientele who also have children.
How does your business contribute to the local community or participate in community events?
I try to do at least one day of fundraiser mini sessions a year and allow my clientele to nominate a charity or nonprofit, and I frequently donate gift certificates to fundraisers. I love giving back to the community that makes my business.
What do you want customers to experience when they interact with your business?
I want clients to feel welcome and comfortable to share their life with me. I am a very open and compassionate person. It is an honor to be a part of each chapter. I love having people come back to me, especially families, and watching their little ones grow up too.
Is your business accessible to all individuals?
Yes! I have been a CNA for nearly 6 years, so I am very familiar with working with individuals with disabilities. If you, your child, or family member need accommodations, please let me know.
What are your future plans or dreams for your business?
I would love to reopen my studio at some point, but I have no set plans for it at this time, especially considering the amount of traveling I do for weddings. My biggest dream and goal is to one day be featured in Vogue Weddings! I have been published in magazines around the world over 20 times!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business in our community?
Go for it, work hard, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.
