The demolition of three blighted properties in the 800 block of Mahantongo St. in Pottsville is set to begin this week.
Coal Region Canary spotted a crew from Brdaric Excavating Inc., of Luzerne, at the job site on Monday afternoon. The job could last the entire week.
During this time, Mahantongo St. will be closed to traffic from 7th to 9th streets. The road will be opened for emergency vehicles to pass through, if necessary.
In March, Schuylkill County Commissioners OK’d a $93,700 contract to Brdaric to take down the properties at 800-802-804 Mahantongo St. They’ve been blighted for a number of years. Money for the project is coming from the state’s Dept. of Community and Economic Development and County demolition funds.
In October 2025, the then-Pottsville City Council members authorized then-Solicitor Ed Brennan to begin the conservatorship process to get the parcels into the hands of new owners. However, in January, when the new administration was inaugurated, one of the first actions it took was to abandon the conservatorship process in favor of taking the properties by eminent domain.
That process was completed earlier this year and a decision to raze the properties was made. It was originally hoped that the properties would be torn down by the start of the Yuengling Light Lager Jogger 5K race that goes right by the properties.
