Schuylkill County government has received $1.6 million in federal funding that’ll go toward the cost of renovations at the Courthouse in Pottsville.
US Rep. Dan Meuser (PA-9) says the funding is coming from the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that he recently voted in favor of in the House of Representatives. In order to complete the necessary work at the Courthouse, it’ll require the County government to put up about $800,000.
The $2.4 million project will modernize three elevators inside the Courthouse as well as replace aging exterior doors and windows, replace HVAC units on the building’s roof, install temperature-monitoring sensors, and repair retaining walls outside.
“These improvements addressed critical infrastructure needs while helping ease the financial burden on local taxpayers. As a result, the County can now direct those resources toward other important priorities and initiatives that benefit our residents,” Schuylkill County Commissioners Chairman Larry Padora says in a statement released from Meuser’s office.
Padora says the County has been setting aside money in its maintenance budget for these renovations but the federal assistance will allow the project to be completed at one time, rather than bit-by-bit over time.
Commissioner Boots Hetherington adds, “While our administration has worked diligently to maintain the building, critical upgrades to the windows and HVAC system have become increasingly urgent.”
And Commissioner Gary Hess says it’s important for the County to maintain the historic Courthouse building.
“The courthouse is an old, historic building, and I have always said that it is the people’s house. It is our responsibility to ensure that it remains well-maintained and operating smoothly, not only for the residents we serve today but for future generations as well.”
In addition to the $1.6 million dedicated for the Schuylkill County Courthouse renovations, the FY 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Related Agencies Appropriations Act fully funds SNAP benefits, as well as WIC, the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and summer food programs.
Meuser adds the bill funds initiatives at the Dept. of Agriculture, including $1.1 billion for the Farm Service Agency, $1.226 billion for the Food Safety and Inspection Service, $1.642 billion for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and $1.795 billion for the Agricultural Research Service.
It also provides $3.81 billion for rural development programs and invests $40 million for the Reconnect Rural Broadband Program.
