Two men are facing criminal charges following an alleged fight at a kindergarten concert in Pottsville on Wednesday.
According to police in Pottsville, officers were sent to John S. Clarke Elementary shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the request of the School Resource Officer.
During their investigation, police say they learned that a verbal altercation at the kindergarten concert in the school’s cafeteria had escalated into a physical confrontation just after a member of the school’s staff had separated the two men.
The altercation forced the end of the concert before the final song could be performed.
Police say they obtained video of the altercation from the school. It allegedly shows Angel Garcia, 50, and Mark Morales, 32, both of Pottsville, fighting inside the cafeteria.
Morales is being charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of disorderly conduct. Garcia is facing a single count of disorderly conduct.
In a statement sent to parents following the incident, Pottsville Area School District Superintendent Dr. Guy Lowery said, “The adults involved made a decision to engage in unsafe behavior which disrupted an event that should have been a proud moment for all of our kindergarten families to enjoy.”
Lowery thanked the quick intervention of Pottsville Bureau of Police at Wednesday’s incident.
“As a school community, we can not and will not let the actions of select individuals take away from our students’ accomplishments, nor will we tolerate inappropriate decorum that not only creates unsafe situations for all involved, but also takes an important moment away from our children,” Lowery said.
