A truck driver was killed Friday morning in a hit-and-run crash while securing a trailer along Interstate 78 in Berks County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Troopers from the Hamburg Barracks say the fatal collision occurred at about 11:15 a.m. near mile marker 13.3 in Bethel Township.
According to the police report, the male operator of a blue Volvo tractor-trailer was stopped on the eastbound shoulder of the highway and was outside fixing straps on his flatbed trailer. While he was standing along the shoulder and the right travel lane, he was struck by a white truck, possibly another tractor-trailer, traveling east in the right lane, police say.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the impact, the striking truck continued east on I-78, according to investigators. Based on evidence recovered at the scene, police state the fleeing white truck will have moderate to heavy passenger-side damage and is missing its passenger-side mirror and metal mirror frame piece.
State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to contact Trooper Zimmerman at the Hamburg barracks at 610-562-6885. Specifically, if anyone traveling eastbound on I-78 near Bethel Township between 11-11:20 a.m. Friday that has dash cam video showing a white truck in the right lane with moderate passenger side damage, missing a side mirror, they should contact State Police.
