On Saturday morning, Mark Halabura and dozens more farmers and enthusiasts from Schuylkill County and beyond participated in an antique tractor pull.
The event was organized by the all-volunteer Agricultural Museum and held at Schuylkill County Fairgrounds in Summit Station, Wayne Township.
Halabura has been participating in tractor pulls and the Ag Museum since he was 16 years old. He says he participates in about 8-10 such tractor pulls every year.
He used to do it more but as for why he continues to participate, he says, “It’s great. All the people are great to be around. The Ag Museum is a great organization.”
At Saturday’s tractor pull, Halabura rode atop a 1938 John Deere. He says maintaining such an old machine really isn’t as difficult as many might think. It’s really just about maintenance.
Halabura says he enjoys riding the older tractors – the ones that helped start his family’s business known for its Christmas trees, Halabura Farms outside Orwigsburg.
Antique Tractor Pull Helps Schuylkill County Agricultural Museum
Any money made from Saturday’s antique tractor pull goes toward the Agricultural Museum, located at the Fairgrounds site.
This is the first of three antique tractor pulls this year. There’s another scheduled during the Schuylkill County Fair on Aug. 3 and one for the Fall, on Oct. 5. Each starts at 10 a.m.
“If there’s anyone out there that wants to help volunteer, we’re always looking for new members,” Halabura says.
In addition to the tractor pulls, the Ag Museum also hosts the following pulls during Schuylkill County Fair Week:
