Famous Reading Outdoors just donated a side-by-side (SXS) vehicle to Minersville Police Dept.
The SXS is a Yamaha Wolvernine RMAX 1000.
Minersville PD and Famous Reading Outdoors recently entered into an agreement over outdoor recreation vehicle enforcement and safety, according to Minersville Sgt. Jeffrey Bowers.
Off-road riders are permitted to use their vehicles on some roads within the borough 7 days a week. Previously, the idea of allowing ATVs on Minersville streets was just floated on a trial basis.
Minersville believes allowing ATV riders on its streets provides a tourism boost to the borough.
Police plan to use the new vehicle to ensure the safety and compliance of outdoor enthusiasts enjoying Famous Reading Outdoors trails and streets within the borough, according to a police press release.
Palmer says the SXS can help borough police provide support for an off-road emergency on the Minersville trail, especially where a regular vehicle can’t access.
Minersville has more than 60 acres of land that borders Famous Reading Outdoors property. The SXS, Palmer believes, can help Minersville police catch trespassers and those who may illegally dump garbage in those areas.
“The main goal is to ensure the Minersville off-road ordinance rules are being followed and that non-pass holders are not taking advantage of the program,” Palmer says.
