Travel Restrictions Go Into Effect on Major Roads Overnight

Travel restrictions go into effect at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission have already implemented travel restrictions ahead of the expected heavy snow forecast for overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.

The following restrictions go into effect beginning at 3 a.m. Tuesday and some of these road bans will definitely impact Schuylkill County motorists. 

Schuylkill County will be under a Winter Storm Warning from Midnight until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Travel Restrictions Caused by Feb. 12-13 Snowstorm

Tier 4 restrictions are in place for Interstate 81, from Interstate 78 to the New York border. Under Tier 4 restrictions, no commercial vehicles are allowed on the road. Also, the following vehicles aren’t permitted on these roads: school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes, and passenger vehicles towing trailers

This Tier 4 ban also affects the following roads in Pennsylvania: 

  • I-80 from milepost 173 (Lamar) to the New Jersey border
  • I-84, entire length
  • I-180, entire length
  • I-380, entire length
  • PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) from I-80 to Clarks Summit (Exit 130)

Tier 2 restrictions will also go into effect at 3 a.m. Tuesday. These restrictions affect the entire length of I-78 and Interstate 80, from Interstate 79 to Milepost 173 (Lamar). 

Tier 2 restrictions will also apply to the following roads across Pennsylvania: 

  • PA Turnpike (I-76) from New Stanton (Exit 75) to Breezewood (Exit 161)
  • I-99, entire length
  • U.S. 22 from I-78 to the New Jersey border
  • Route 33, entire length
  • PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) from I-78 to I-80

Under Tier 2 restrictions, the following vehicles are not allowed on the roads under this ban: 

  • Tractors without trailers
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers
  • Tractors towing loaded tandem trailers without chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs)
  • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV
  • Passenger vehicles towing trailers
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches, regardless of the availability of trains or ATDs
  • Motorcycles
