4 Schuylkill League Teams Advance in District XI Boys Basketball Tournaments

Several Schuylkill League boys’ basketball teams punched their ticket to the next round of the 2021 District XI basketball tournaments with wins on Friday night.

Here’s a look at some of the results:

Class 2A: Blue Devils Down Haven in OT

Luke Matta led 5th seed Shenandoah Valley with 23 points in an overtime upset of Schuylkill Haven Friday night, 59-55.

The Blue Devils move on in the Class 2A tournament and face top-seeded Marian Catholic on Tuesday, March 9.

In the other Class 2A games Friday night, #6 Mahanoy Area upset #3 Tri-Valley, 70-56. The Golden Bears move on to face the 2 seed Williams Valley, which rolled over Moravian Academy, 58-24. The Bears and Vikings also face off on Tuesday night.

Class 4: Olympians Rip Pine Grove, Spartans Bow Out

In Class 4A action on Friday night, Jim Thorpe topped Schuylkill League rival Pine Grove, 52-42, in a quarterfinal matchup. The Olympians will move on to the semifinals against Bethlehem Catholic, which dismissed North Schuylkill, 76-54.

Jim Thorpe is the only Schuylkill League team left in Class 4A now. On the other side of the quarterfinals bracket, Northwestern Lehigh topped Lehighton, 45-31. Allentown Central Catholic downed Wilson, 61-44, to set up that semifinals game. Those two contests tip off on Monday night.

Other District XI Boys Basketball Tournaments

Several other Schuylkill League teams are still alive in the District XI playoffs.

In Class 1A, top-seeded Schuylkill League champions Nativity BVM has to wait until Wednesday to get started. They’re waiting out an opening round matchup on Saturday between Lincoln Leadership Academy and Roberto Clemente Charter.

Pottsville and Blue Mountain have a chance to move to the Class 5A championship with wins in the semifinals round on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide take on East Stroudsburg-South at 1 p.m. and the Eagles face top-seeded Bangor at 3:30 p.m.

Panther Valley was eliminated from the Class 3A tournament on Thursday night, losing to Notre Dame-Green Pond, 75-58.
