Pine Grove took a 2-1 lead into the half and held on to defeat Pottsville Monday night in matchday 3 of Schuylkill League boys soccer play.
The Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Pottsville puts them clear atop the very early Division 1 standings. Blue Mountain, which had the night off, sits at 2-0, a win behind Pine Grove at 3-0.
The Crimson Tide fall to 0-2 in the early part of league play.
In other Division 1 games, Jim Thorpe had a 3-0 lead at the half and didn’t need any more but got it for a 4-1 over Lehighton.
The Olympians are now at 2-1 in the early going, tied with Tamaqua, which knocked off North Schuylkill on Monday, 7-3.
Lehighton falls to 3-0 and the Spartans have stumbled out to an 0-2 start so far.
Among the small schools, Weatherly topped Minersville, 2-1, at home on Monday. The win moves the Wreckers into a first-place tie with Nativity.
The Hilltoppers’ match with Schuylkill Haven got moved to September 12. Minersville’s lost two in a row in Schuylkill League play since its opening match draw with Tri-Valley.
The Bulldogs broke into the win column on Monday, topping Lourdes. 2-1.
Up next, on Wednesday in Division 1, Pottsville travels to Blue Mountain, Tamaqua heads out to Pine Grove and Lehighton goes to North Schuylkill.
In Division 2, Weatherly goes to Williams Valley, Nativity heads to Minersville, and Tri-Valley visits Schuylkill Haven. The next night, Haven is at Nativity to make up for Monday’s postponement.
