District XI Basketball Playoffs Start Thursday

district xiThe District XI basketball playoffs start Thursday. And five teams with local ties are in action.

All games on Thursday, Feb. 21, are weather permitting.

In Class 2A, #4 Minersville will face #5 Williams Valley. That quarterfinal starts at 7 p.m. at North Schuylkill in Fountain Springs. The winner gets top-seeded Mahanoy Area on Monday.

In 2018, Minersville was the District XI runner-up and advanced to the quarterfinals in the PIAA tournament. Minersville won the District XI 2A title in 2017 and the District XI Class AA title in 2016. The Battlin’ Miners won the PIAA championship in 2017.

Mahanoy Area is the defending District XI 2A champion. The Golden Bears also advanced to the quarterfinal round of the PIAA tournament in 2018.

The other quarterfinal matchup sees #3 Moravian Academy taking on #6 Shenandoah Valley. That game tips at 6 p.m. at Northwestern Lehigh. The winner gets #2 Marian Catholic Fillies on Monday.

District XI 2A Boys Tournament Gets Underway

In the Class 1A tournament, the quarterfinal round starts with #4 Lincoln Leadership taking on #5 Weatherly Wreckers. That’s tipping off at 7:30 p.m. at Northwestern Lehigh. In the other game, the #3 MMI Preppers take on #6 Salem Christian. That game takes place in Hazleton.

(5) Weatherly (7:30p, at NW Lehigh)

(3) MMI Prep vs.
(6) Salem Christian (TBA, at Hazleton)
