Earlier this week, staff at Hillside SPCA took in a dog from the latest case of animal neglect in Schuylkill County.
Sassy, a 7-year-old lab was found in frigid conditions with little shelter and no access to water in Coaldale.
According to State Police-Frackville, Troopers were called to a home on E. Ridge St. in the borough for a possible case of animal cruelty. When they arrived, the found Sassy had been left outside as temps dropped below zero.
Further investigation found that Sassy had been left to stay outdoors in an unheated dog house with only blankets inside to keep her warm. Hillside staff members tell The Canary that blankets could be the worst thing Sassy had to keep her warm. If she had gotten wet, the blankets could have frozen to her.
Sassy was not allowed indoors. And her accomodations included no water. The water had frozen solid
Mikisha Acevedo, 36, surrendered Sassy to the shelter in Pottsville and Troopers delivered her to Hillside on Wedneday, the coldest day of this week’s unbearably cold conditions. Acevedo is facing neglect of animal charges.
For Sassy, she’s looking for a forever home. Hillside staff tell The Canary that Acevedo was her fourth owner in her seven short years.
When she arrived on Wednesday, Sassy was skinny and had “yeasty” skin. Her nails were “extremely overgrown.”
However, she’s gotten her nails done and a vet has looked her over and is otherwise healthy. She’s a bid timid right now but just needs some time to get properly sociailzed. They do know that Sassy likes soft Milkbones.
