Minersville Borough Council members passed what may be the biggest tax on Pennsylvania Skill machines in Schuylkill County.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen municipalities around the coal region pass new taxes on PA Skill machines, often raising them twice as much or more than they’ve been in the past.
Pottsville, for example, raised the rate from $75 to $150. Girardville implemented a $250 tax on the machines. But Minersville may have the biggest tax on these Skill machines in the area.
Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to enact a $1,000 per machine tax on all Skill machines in the borough. The previous tax was $60 per unit. It’s part of Minersville’s Amusement Tax Ordinance.
Minersville officials believe there are 43 Skill machines operating within borough limits but expect a few more to go online in the coming weeks or months. Assuming all machines stay where they are, it’ll mean $43,000 in revenue for the borough.
The Amusement Tax also places a levy on jukeboxes ($50 each) and “mechanical amusement devices” like pinball machines ($100).
Minersville also passed an ordinance placing a tax on all operating gas pumps in the borough at $200 per pump.
