Two homes were severely damaged and four people are displaced by a two-alarm fire early Friday morning in Pottsville.
Just after 6 a.m., fire units from across the city and Schuylkill County were dispatched to 676-678 N. 2nd St.
Assistant Pottsville Fire Chief A.J. Alves tells The Canary fire broke out at 678 N. 2nd St. and spread to other home in the duplex, 676. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.
According to Danielle Boris, Disaster Relief with American Red Cross-Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter, four people were living inside 678 N. 2nd St. and are being assisted by the organization.
The home at 676 N. 2nd St. was vacant.
It took about two hours to get this morning’s fire under control. A second alarm had to be struck and a second water source – from Laurel Blvd. – was needed due to water consumption, Alves said.
In addition to all seven Pottsville fire companies, crews from Pine Grove, Minersville, Port Carbon, Schuylkill Haven, and Saint Clair were called to assist at the scene, he added. More fire crews were called in on standby to cover the rest of Pottsville while the blaze was contained.
