Port Carbon Ponders Response to Fart Cans

Some residents in one Schuylkill County community are wondering what can be done about fart cans on vehicles.

Folks in one neighborhood of Port Carbon approached Borough Council members this week to say they’re sick and tired of hearing these loud, obnoxious modified exhausts on a vehicle driven by one person in particular. And they wanted to know if the borough can take action against the person.

People said they can’t sit in their living room and watch a movie or relax on their couch because of the flatulent sound created by fart cans. They also said the noise severely bothers an autistic child and frightens an elderly woman with dementia.

The offenders, according to those taking the issue to council on Tuesday, sometimes just idle their parked vehicles and rev their engine to generate the fart-like sound.

“It’s just a blatant disrespect,” one woman told Port Carbon council members.

Borough Solicitor James Conville suggested that police be notified and the offenders could be cited for disorderly conduct. Conville said it’s a summary offense but repeated violations could eventually result in misdemeanor charges against any offenders.

Port Carbon’s Code Enforcement Officer Nick Hazlett reviewed ordinances during Tuesday’s meeting while council members spent an hour in an executive session and then conducted other business.

Hazlett said Port Carbon does have a Peace and Good Order ordinance that prohibits “boisterous” noises, such as those that would be created by fart cans.

For now, Council President Scott Krater told the concerned residents that they’ll notify the borough’s police department to look into the matter further.
