The top student speller in Schuylkill County is competing today as the Scripps National Spelling Bee gets underway outside Washington, DC.
Daniel Kim, from Frackville and a 7th grader at Assumption BVM, is Speller 190 at the national Bee, which is currently underway. Kim is one of 245 spellers from 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe competing at the 96th National Spelling Bee.
Monday began the Preliminary round of the competition. Spellers get a word to spell and if they get that right, they must answer a vocabulary question where they answer a multiple choice question about the definition of another word.
If they get those right, they move on in the competition.
The Preliminaries of the Spelling Bee are Tuesday and air in their entirety on ION Plus channel. Check with your cable or streaming service to learn how to access ION Plus.
