A Pottsville man was killed Tuesday afternoon as a result of a vehicle crash in Berks County.
According to information from State Police-Schuylkill Haven, the crash happened at the intersection of Route 183 and Appalachian National Scenic Trail at about 2:30 p.m.
At that time and place, a vehicle driven by 56-year-old William J. Lecher, of Pottsville, was traveling north on Route 183. Police say Lecher’s vehicle crossed over the center median into the southbound lanes of the highway and then exited the shoulder.
Lecher’s vehicle then collided head-on with a pair of PennDOT road signs and then hit a grass embankment with its front driver’s side before coming to rest.
As police arrived at the scene of the crash, they say Lecher was unresponsive and locked inside the vehicle. Police were able to remove him from the vehicle to attempt life-saving measures until Schuylkill EMS arrived at the scene, which continued attempts to revive Lecher while transporting him to Geisinger-St. Luke’s Hospital, near Orwigsburg, where he was pronounced deceased.
