Pillow Man Dies After Pulling Man From Burning Vehicle in Dauphin County

Police say Kevin Geary used his jacket to smother flames on the man on fire, collapsed a short time later.

A Pillow man died after he pulled another man from a burning vehicle that had crashed in Dauphin County Thursday morning.

A Dauphin County man died in a fiery crash Thursday morning after he had pulled another man from a burning vehicle.

According to State Police-Lykens, the crash happened along Route 225 in Washington Twp., Dauphin County, at a little after 5 a.m.

Police say a Nissan Versa with two men inside was traveling south on Route 225 when it failed to negotiate a left curve in the road. The vehicle went off the right side of the road and hit a small embankment, then continued in a southerly direction until it hit a tree stump.

The vehicle spun around and overturned, coming to a final rest on its passenger side. That’s when the vehicle caught on fire and became fully engulfed in flames, police say.

One person in the vehicle, 60-year-old Kevin Geary, of Pillow, was able to escape the vehicle through the windshield on the passenger side. Police say Geary then pulled 33-year-old John Carlos Reyes, also from Pillow, from the vehicle.

Reyes was on fire when Geary pulled him from the vehicle, police say. Geary used a jacket to smother the flames on Reyes.

Geary then collapsed next to Reyes and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Reyes was taken by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center with serious injuries, police say.

Police say their investigation into this crash is ongoing.
