Good Intent Fire Co. in Pottsville celebrated its 175th anniversary on Saturday with a raucous and circuitous lights and sirens parade all over the city.
Trucks from Pottsville’s 7 fire companies were joined by firefighters from nearby Port Carbon, Minersville, Saint Clair, and Palo Alto and from companies in Mahanoy City, Pine Grove, Schuylkill Haven and elsewhere in Schuylkill County.
Together, they rode through downtown Pottsville twice, around the East Side, and all the way out to Westwood, back through Yorkville, and down West Market St. back to its historic station on N. 2nd St.
Festivities were held back at the brick stationhouse, built way back in 1882. Good Intent Fire Co. was founded in 1846 – only 40 years after Pottsville, itself, was founded – and is one of the charter members of Pottsville Fire Dept.
According to PottsvilleFire.com, in 1910, Good Intent purchased the first motorized fire apparatus in city history.
NOTE: A 175th anniversary is known as a demisemiseptcentennial.
