The unemployment rate in Schuylkill County rose to 5.7% in December 2019.
That’s according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Schuylkill County’s unemployment rate has risen a full percentage point since September 2019.
Schuylkill County Unemployment 2019
The latest numbers on unemployment here in the coal region are concerning, of course. The rate has risen sharply since hitting an all-time low in April 2019. Last spring, the unemployment rate hit 4.1%. It wasn’t even close to that low since it hit 4.4.% in Schuylkill County in October 2017.
Not So Great 2020
Schuylkill County’s unemployment rate is more than 1% higher than Pennsylvania’s rate in December 2019.
The state’s unemployment rate also hit a low in April 2019 when it hit 3.8%. It’s now at 4.5%.
Nationally, the unemployment rate is at 3.5%. In December 2019, 145,000 jobs were added to the economy, according to BLS data.
It seems as the economy continues roaring elsewhere, we’re not seeing the effects of that at home. That’s true in Pennsylvania and especially here in Schuylkill County.
