Police officers in Minersville are sporting special purple patches in September to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month.
Chief Jeffrey Bowers says the initiative is meant to show his department’s support for area students and their mental well-being. “Law enforcement, schools, families, coaches, and community members all play an important role in creating an environment where young people feel supported, valued, and comfortable asking for help when they need it,” he says in a statement from the department.
Minersville PD is partnering the Minersville Area School District’s Aevidum Club in wearing the purple patches this month. And the community has a chance to show their support at the upcoming home football game on Sept. 24. Patches will be available for purchase at the game for $10. They’re also available right now by visiting Minersville PD’s headquarters.
All proceeds from patch sales will be donated to Aevidum Club of Minersville Area School District, Bowers says.
“The Minersville Police Department is committed to supporting the mental health of our students and fostering strong bonds with the community we serve. Through partnerships such as this one with the Aevidum Club, the department hopes to continue building a community where every student knows that someone is there to listen, support them, and help them through difficult times,” Bowers says.
Last year, Minersville police wore pink patches in October to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Money from those patch sales were donated to a Minersville area woman who was battling breast cancer.
