A Schuylkill County man is facing a stalking charge because police believe he placed an Apple AirTag on his ex-girlfriend’s car as a means of tracking her whereabouts.
Police in Saint Clair say they were called to a home in the borough on April 26 after a woman reported finding the tracking device zip-tied to her front bumper. She told police she didn’t authorize anyone to place the device on her vehicle and had only just noticed it that day.
The AirTag was collected as evidence by police and sent to the State Police Crime Lab for further analysis.
A few days later, on May 4, the same woman phoned police again to say she’d received a call from an unknown number the Friday prior. When she answered the call, she knew it to be her ex, Jonathan Spontak, 33, of Cressona.
The woman says she told Spontak that someone had placed an AirTag on her vehicle and that she might be in danger. Spontak allegedly reacted by laughing, telling her to shut up and admitted to placing the device on her car more than a year ago.
When asked why he wouldn’t leave her alone, Spontak reportedly replied that he wouldn’t stop. He also allegedly said he’d run from the police in Pottsville and needed money from her for a lawyer.
The woman said she blocked Spontak’s number and told him to stop contacting her.
Spontak has been charged with a misdemeanor count of stalking and a summary count of harassment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 7.
