Schuylkill County Woman Charged with Forging Grandmother’s Checks, Stealing $15K

A Schuylkill County woman has been charged with multiple counts of forgery and related offenses after police say she stole more than $15,000 from her grandmother.

According to an affidavit filed by police in Mahanoy City, Kerri Miller is accused of writing out numerous checks connected to her grandmother’s bank account to herself. Miller then allegedly signed the checks by forging her grandmother’s signature.

Police say initially that four checks were discovered to be forged. Each check was written out for more than $2,000, for a total of $8,900. Miller deposited the forged checks to her CACL Credit Union account via mobile app.

Miller’s grandmother tells police that her granddaughter was not authorized to write the checks or withdraw funds from her account. She told police that Miller had been staying with her and her husband for a time but was kicked out because it was believed she was stealing medication and being physically abusive.

Further investigation by police reportedly revealed that Miller’s theft wasn’t limited to those four checks. Police discovered six more checks that were deposited into Miller’s account in the same fashion. Check values ranged from $550 to $1,700. In total, Miller is accused of stealing $15,444 from her grandparents through forged checks.

Miller, 33, who is currently listed as homeless, is charged with 10 counts of forgery, 10 counts of identity theft, and 10 counts of unauthorized device access, all third-degree felonies. She was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge AJ Serina on Friday night. Serina set bail at 10% of $50,000, which Miller hasn’t posted. Miller remains in Schuylkill County Prison, as of Wednesday, Jan. 29. A prelminary hearing before Judge Anthony Kilker is scheduled for Feb. 6.
