Pennsylvania drivers already pay one of the highest gas taxes in the country. And now, to start 2023, it’s higher.
Pennsylvania’s new gas tax went into effect on Jan. 1, 2023. The new gas tax is 61.1 cents per gallon. It’s up 3.5 cents from last year and this year’s gas tax increase is Pennsylvania’s first since 2018.
Gas in Pennsylvania is taxed at one of the highest rates in the country. Only California and Illinois pay a higher gas tax per gallon.
Here’s a look at the 10 highest gas tax rates in the country in 2023:
- California: 70.95¢
- Illinois: 62.7¢
- Pennsylvania: 61.1¢
- Hawai’i: 52.41¢
- Indiana: 50.79¢
- Nevada: 50.48¢
- Washington: 49.4¢
- New York: 49.02¢
- Michigan: 46.57¢
- Florida: 45.05¢
Pennsylvania Gas Tax Up to 61.1¢ Per Gallon in 2023
The Pennsylvania tax on diesel and kerosene fuel also went up at the start of 2023.
Diesel fuel and kerosene now have a 78.5¢ per gallon tax in Pennsylvania. It’s up from 74.1¢ per gallon in 2022.
Taxes on aviation gasoline and jet fuel remain unchanged from last year.

The gas tax increase was actually written into the law by a Republican Governor years ago, Tom Corbett.
