Various local media outlets are reporting that one person has died in a fire at the Tamaqua Hi-Rise building Friday morning.
According to a report from the (Pottsville) Republican-Herald, firefighters were called to the scene on Broad St. in Tamaqua at about 6:15 a.m. Friday. The Schuylkill County Coroner’s office confirmed that one person died in a fire that was contained to a single apartment in the facility.
The (Lehighton) Times-News reports that another resident at the Hi-Rise was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital for injuries sustained in the blaze.
Although fire was contained to a single unit in the building on the 16th floor, 5 floors of the building were evacuated due to smoke and water damage.
The Times-News is also reporting that several people, including a Tamaqua police officer, were treated at the scene this morning for smoke inhalation.
The fire was doused in about a half-hour, reports indicate.
