Ranges add up each period's NWS wording ("1 to 2 inches" + "a quarter to half an inch"), so they match what readers see on weather.gov. NWS rounds each period into wide steps, so two nearby towns can land a step apart. Single totals use the exact NWS numbers behind that wording; they're smoother but look more precise than the forecast really is.
