One of Pottsville’s most famous native sons will be in town on Memorial Day weekend to commemorate the solemn holiday.

Former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO Forces and Ret. Gen. George Joulwan will be in Pottsville this May for a series of events to benefit the Historical Society of Schuylkill County.

Joulwan will be signing copies of his memoir Watchman at the Gates at the Historical Society’s headquarters in the former Female Grammar School on North Centre St. in Pottsville on May 29. The book signing lasts from 1-4 p.m.

If you’re interested in Joulwan’s career and his personal life, you’ll want to pick up a copy of his book. Joulwan details memories of his childhood growing up in Pottsville, his time at West Point and his illustrious military career.

The Pottsville native served 36 years in the US Army. When he retired, Joulwan served as Commander-in-Chief, United States European Command, and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. A bust of Joulwan is currently outside the Historical Society headquarters.

The following evening, Joulwan will be keynote speaker at a fundraiser dinner for the Historical Society. The dinner will be held at Fountain Springs Country Inn from 5-7 p.m. on May 30. Tickets for the dinner go for $100 a person or $175 per couple. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased by sending an email to sch.hist@comcast.net or by calling 570-622-7540.

Joulwan will then speak at Pottsville’s Garfield Square on Memorial Day morning as part of the city’s Memorial Day observation. That event begins at 10 a.m. on May 31.
