State Rep. Mike Tobash (R-125) will not seek re-election in 2020, sources tell The Canary.

He’s the second Schuylkill County representative in Harrisburg to announce he won’t run for office again this year.

In late 2019, Rep. Neal Goodman (D-123) announced he would not for his seat in 2020. Earlier this year, the county’s other representative, Jerry Knowles (R-124) said he is seeking re-election this year.

Tobash represents the 125th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 2011. The district includes Pottsville and most of western and southern Schuylkill County. It also includes a portion of Dauphin County.

Tobash first got elected to office in 2010 when he defeated Democrat incumbent Tim Seip. Tobash ran unopposed in the 2018 General Election.

In 2012, Tobash beat Democrat Vicki Harman. He faced no challengers in 2014 and 2016.

Golden Opportunity for Schuylkill County Republicans

The two seats open present opportunities for each of the County parties. Democrats appear to be grooming a candidate to fill Goodman’s shoes in the 123rd.

Who will step forward to replace Tobash in the 125th? Can Schuylkill County voters expect a political insider?

The 2020 election cycle seems like an opportunity for the Schuylkill County Republican Party to get candidates in all the open offices. Voters locally will flood the polls, as they did in 2016, to support President Trump’s re-election. Having down-ballot candidates aligned with Trump seems like as good a chance as any to put three GOPers in the State House.
