Historically, it’s not good. We almost never have a White Christmas here in Schuylkill County. Here are definitely not reasons we don’t:
- Climate change
- Making the “Naughty” list
- Never learning the words to the song
- Because we never have nice things in Schuylkill County
In reality, we never have a White Christmas because it’s typically too “warm” for snow. In order for a White Christmas, you need snow. That’s not us talking, that’s science.
What Does Having a White Christmas Mean?
A lot of people think a White Christmas means it snows on Christmas Day. That’s understandable. You wake up to see your haul from Santa and it only makes sense that it should be snowing. That’s how it works on TV so that’s how it should work in real life, of course.
Some more liberal people say White Christmas can mean it snows on Christmas Eve and that counts, too.
Another romantic idea, yes. But both are incorrect, for the most part.
The true definition of a White Christmas means there should be 1 inch of snow on the ground. And if you want to be serious about this, it has to be an inch, not one of those coatings or a dusting. That’s not enough Christmas spirit.
So, we mentioned that chances are slim here in Schuylkill County for a White Christmas.
Check out this map from National Weather Service. It shows the historic chances of having a White Christmas, dating back to 1981 and through 2010.
We’re not telling you where Schuylkill County is on this map. You’ll have to figure that out on your own but rest assured, the chances of it happening aren’t good at all, historically.
The best chances of a White Christmas in Schuylkill County happen in those infamously named “higher elevations” of the coal region. There, you can see your chances improve to almost 50-50. But in reality, you have better chances at winning a halftime 50-50 than you do having a White Christmas.
For the rest of us in the lower elevations of Schuylkill County, our chances dip drastically.
Sorry. Not us, remember … science.
Big Christmas Blizzard of 2002
Of course, historical averages are just that. In order to have a chance, you need to have experienced a few White Christmas holidays during that time. Even 1 in 4 chances means you’ll have a White Christmas a few times a decade.
But who can forget the big Christmas Blizzard of 2002?
That life-threatening storm buried us here in Schuylkill County. Travel was crippled all over and thousands were without electricity when they needed it most.
In fact, some people spent a portion of their holiday in a Red Cross shelter instead of the comfort of their own home.
